You still don’t get it! Most of us who went to Vietnam volunteered for it. Many of us, myself included, already knew that the USSR was a grave threat and that the Vietnam war was a Soviet project.

Since you don’t know that, consider this: Ho Chi Minh (his nom de guere) was a founding member of the *French* communist party, was educated and employed by the Soviet run Communist International (COMINTERN) and was send to Southeast Asia to oversea the conquest of the region for the Soviet cause.

And, since you probably don’t know this either — the bulk of the South Vietnamese population did not want to be ruled by the communists. The number holding that view grew dramatically after the vicious, pre-planned atrocities by the communists after they temporarily conquered Hue.

And, you probably also don’t know this — the Tet Offensive, when this happened, was the greatest communist offensive, and was an utter disaster for them — the VC was wiped out. Oh, and the Viet Cong were not local guerillas, they were always controlled from Hanoi, and many were former Viet Minh northerners who were ordered to stay in the South after the truce in 1954.
