It is a tough trade-off - how many Ukrainian and Russian lives do we sacrifice in the hopes of punishing Putin.

Sometimes a safe offramp is the best solution, as horribly distasteful as it is.

Of course, we can hope that someone in Russia will just kill the guy, but the likely outcome of that is just another monster in charge of Russia, with the same intent.
