I doubt there's any evidence (i.e. the stuff science requires) behind that idea. It's too nice a "nativs are natural environmentalists" narrative.

You present a plausible argument however there is no proof either way. What is completely absent is a cogent, coherent US strategy. Pulling out of the agreement without a plan was hasty and dangerous. Now all we have is a slow moving stalemate culminating in some nasty outcome.
