Can the glide bombs be shot down? Could more numerous, less expensive weapons be used, or need they stay too far back from the front lines

For example, could the Gephard guns be effective.

I'm sure the Ukrainians know the answers and have made decisions based on those - which appear to be to retreat from pockets, slowly, in the face of the problems you listed.

You present a plausible argument however there is no proof either way. What is completely absent is a cogent, coherent US strategy. Pulling out of the agreement without a plan was hasty and dangerous. Now all we have is a slow moving stalemate culminating in some nasty outcome.
